Every year I engage in a futile attempt to read the minds of the self-important, self-congratulatory industry insiders who make up the voting body of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I sometimes don’t do very well, but considering some of the choices the academy has made recently, maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
